Royals' Callaspo arrested on suspicion of DUI Friday
The Royals said they were still looking into the incident and Callaspo would be available to play this weekend in a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Acquired over the winter from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for pitcher Billy Buckner, Callaspo has appeared in 42 games. He was batting .290 in 100 at-bats with four RBIs.
"It's certainly a regrettable situation, very unfortunate," general manager Dayton Moore said. "I know Alberto is very remorseful. He's embarrassed. He's scared. We're very supportive of him getting through this tough time."
According to police reports, University of Missouri-Kansas City authorities stopped the 25-year-old Callaspo about 3 a.m. after he allegedly ran a red light near the campus in midtown Kansas City. He was booked into jail about 4:30 a.m. and released shortly before noon on a signature bond.
"Obviously, we've had a player that's had an incident," manager Trey Hillman said. "We're still gathering as much information as we can. We are going to handle it internally as soon as we've collected all the facts. We're continuing to gather more and more facts and try to get all the facts before we address it."
Hillman said he and Callaspo have "talked at length."
"Beyond that, I'm not going to say anything else about it," he added.
