Randolph denies report that said he was offered job on Nats staff

Former New York Mets Willie Randolph refuted a weekend report in Newsday that said he declined a chance to join the Nationals' staff either as bench coach or third base coach.

"There are [stories] out there that I turned down the Washington [third base] coaching job," Randolph said, according to the New York Post. "That's not true. [General manager] Jim [Bowden] and I spoke and he knew that I was looking for an opportunity to manage and he said he would get back to me. It was never offered, so there was nothing to turn down."

Randolph, former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly and former Oakland Athletics manager Ken Macha are the finalists in Milwaukee to succeed interim manager Dale Sveum.

The Nationals announced on Friday the hiring of five new coaches, including Jim Riggleman as bench coach and Pat Listach as third base coach.
