WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals placed shortstop Cristian Guzman on the 15-day disabled list after Friday's loss to the Florida Marlins.
Guzman suffered a left hamstring strain Monday while leaving the batter's box after his fifth hit in the Nationals' home opener. He was hitting a team-high .515 (17-for-33) with four RBIs as Washington's leadoff batter.
The move was retroactive to April 14.
"He's making a lot of progress, but right now he's not 100 percent," Washington manager Manny Acta said. "It's too early in the year and we don't want to take a chance with him."
Acta said the Nationals would purchase the contract of infielder Alex Cintron from Triple-A Syracuse before Saturday's game.
