ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Oakland Athletics put pitcher Dan Giese on the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-hander Gio Gonzalez from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.

Giese has a nerve problem near his right elbow. He is 0-3 with a 5.32 ERA in seven games, including one start this season.

Gonzalez appeared in one game with the Athletics earlier this year, allowing three runs over five relief innings.

Also, injured infielder Nomar Garciaparra ran the bases, fielded grounders at third and took batting practice before Monday night's game against Tampa Bay.

Garciaparra, placed on the 15-day DL April 29 due to a strained right calf, might be ready to return Wednesday. How he feels Tuesday will impact the decision.

"Wednesday is a possibility," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "We'll know [Tuesday] how possible."

Garciaparra is hitting .231 with one homer and seven RBIs in 12 games this season.
