Marlon Byrd of the Texas Rangers, identified in a report earlier this week as a customer of supplements from a company founded by BALCO's Victor Conte, isn't the only athlete using the supplements, according to Conte.

"There are NFL players," Conte told ESPN.com's Mike Fish. "There are Olympic track and field athletes. There are Olympic swimmers. We're talking about medalists. These people routinely buy from SNAC [Conte's company, Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning]. How do I know? Because I recognize these names."

Conte refused to give names, citing fears the players would be ostracized. Conte supplied banned performance-enhancing drugs to Barry Bonds, baseball's all-time home run leader, as well as being linked to a number of athletes in other sports during his days with BALCO.

"There are NFL players having product directly shipped to team facilities or to their homes," he said. "But I don't think it is fair to the players to go into detail. I don't think it was fair to [British sprinter] Dwain Chambers or Marlon Byrd, either. Enough harm has been caused to players associated with myself. It wouldn't be right for me to offer a list of professional athletes, but there are many."

Earlier this week, Yahoo! Sports wrote about Byrd's relationship with Conte's products.

"I'd been doing the GNC-can search, putting this product with that, seeking and searching," Byrd told Yahoo! Sports. "I tried everything over the counter. I needed an expert."

Conte told Yahoo! Sports that the two had met via e-mail and telephone.

"Marlon was working with a doctor, doing blood testing, a fairly sophisticated regimen," Conte said, according to Yahoo! Sports. "He faxed me the blood results and nutritional program. I told him, 'You are taking a bite of this and a bite of that. I'll teach you how to sit down and have a feast.' "

Byrd told the Dallas Morning News that he trusts Conte unconditionally, and pointed to the fact he's never failed a drug test.

"Everything is approved by MLB," Byrd told the Morning News. "Everything has to be NSF-approved for us to take. Everything I take, he sends to MLB."
