Ramirez will first go on a three-game minor league rehabilitation assignment, starting with Single-A Peoria on Friday.
The third baseman was batting .364 with four homers and 16 RBIs in only 18 games when he went down. The Cubs offense has struggled since. Chicago ranks 26th in the majors in runs scored and RBIs and 28th in batting average. The Cubs led the NL in runs scored last season.
The Cubs are 2-7 on their current road trip, are 36-38 overall and sit in fourth place in the NL Central.
