BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have activated shortstop Jed Lowrie from the 60-day disabled list and then optioned him to Single-A Lowell so he could continue to play as he recovers from a sprained left wrist.
To make room for Lowrie on the roster, outfielder Jonathan Van Every was designated for assignment on Wednesday.
Lowrie played five games with the Red Sox this season before going on the DL with the injured wrist. He underwent surgery on the wrist on April 21 and started a minor league rehab assignment on June 21.
He was 5 for 19 with three RBIs in seven games between Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland. He was going to play for Portland on Wednesday, but the threat of rain there forced the move to Lowell.
