Orioles activate SS Izturis from DL
Izturis was sidelined since June 4, when he was diagnosed with appendicitis. He had surgery the next day.
"I'm 100 percent, and that's a good thing," Izturis said. "Sometimes you get tired of watching the games on TV and on the bench. Now, I get to go out there. I'm real excited."
Izturis batted ninth Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 2 for 6 with a stolen base during a two-game rehabilitative stint with Bowie.
"The first game, I did it all," he said. "I stole a base, I scored two runs, I made a play in the hole. That was the key for me, and I turned a couple double plays. The first day was very good and the next day when I woke up, it was normal."
While Izturis was out, backup Robert Andino played the position very well and enjoyed moderate success as the plate. Orioles manager Dave Trembley said Andino will start Saturday at shortstop, and Izturis will return as the starter on Sunday.
"We're not going to forget the contributions Andino did while Izturis was on the DL," Trembley said.
Hernandez is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in six games with Baltimore. The plan is for him to pitch at Bowie on Monday, then rejoin the Orioles when they face the New York Yankees from July 20-22.
"That allows us to keep the extra position player and go with once less pitcher," Trembley said. "Our options were to put Hernandez in the bullpen, and he's pitching very well. We don't want to do that."
In other news, starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie has a virus and will miss his scheduled start Sunday. Guthrie began feeling symptoms last week, and was forced to leave his start Tuesday night in Seattle after throwing only 58 pitches.
"I think it just hit its peak the day I pitched," Guthrie said.
"We are going to give him some time and hopefully he gets healthy and gets back," Trembley said. "I would expect he would pitch at some point in the Chicago series [after the All-Star break]."
