Pedro Martinez threw 53 pitches in a bullpen session over the weekend in an effort to smooth out some delivery issues from the stretch.

Martinez said he was happy with Sunday's results in Lakewood, N.J., home of the Philadelphia Phillies' Class A BlueClaws.

"I struggled the last time only from the stretch," he said of a start in Triple-A on Friday, when he went five innings, allowing four earned runs. "So we wanted to specifically work on the pitches that I missed in the stretch.

"Like I said before, I thought it was something that could be quickly corrected. I hope I can put it into play soon."

The 37-year-old Martinez made 35 of the 53 pitches from the stretch.

It's unclear when the right-hander will be called up. The Phillies' rotation is stacked with left-handers, including ace Cole Hamels, newly acquired Cliff Lee, veteran Jamie Moyer and rookie J.A. Happ.

Fifth-year righty Joe Blanton is in his second season with the Phillies.

"We don't have a current plan as of yet what the next step is other than he'll throw a bullpen [Sunday]," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said last week. "Once we talk to Pedro about the plan, we'll let you know."

Martinez, 214-99 in 17 major league seasons, signed a one-year deal on July 15 and was immediately placed on the disabled list due to a right shoulder strain.

His first rehab appearance, for Class A Clearwater on July 26, lasted only 1 1/3 innings because of rain.

Martinez's next outing is set for Wednesday at Double-A Reading in Pennsylvania.

"From there, we'll decide for the next one," Martinez said.
