Matzek inked Rockies-record $3.9M deal
DENVER -- Tyler Matzek, the top-rated left-hander in the draft, says a gut feeling prompted him to forgo an education at the University of Oregon and sign with the Colorado Rockies for a club-record $3.9 million.
Matzek said he decided just 10 minutes before Monday night's deadline to sign with the Rockies.
The 6-foot-3 lefty went 13-1 at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, Calif., this year. He toured Coors Field on Friday after signing his contract and said he was headed to play for the Casper Ghosts of the rookie Pioneer League.
Matzek, the 11th overall pick, said he was eager to make it back to cavernous Coors Field, which the humidor has helped turn into a decent pitcher's park, saying: "My philosophy is if they can't hit it, they can't hit it far."
