CHICAGO -- The Washington Nationals have signed veteran right-hander Livan Hernandez and he will start Wednesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs.

The 34-year-old right-hander was released by the Mets on Thursday and signed by Washington on Tuesday. He was 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA with New York and had struggled in his last three starts, allowing 18 earned runs in 14 1/3 innings.

Hernandez pitched for the Nationals in 2005 and 2006, going 15-10 in his first season with the club.

Reliever Collin Balester, who was 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in seven appearances, was sent to Triple-A Syracuse.
