NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball will not punish Alex Rodriguez after completing its investigation into whether he lied about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Times reported Saturday.

Investigators reached out to several of the Yankees third baseman's associates in May to examine whether he used drugs for a longer period than he has acknowledged.

MLB withheld comment Saturday to ESPN about the matter.

"If and when we have something to announce, we announce it," spokesman Rich Levin said.

Rodriguez's attorney, Jay K. Reisinger, declined to comment to the Times.

Rodriguez admitted in February to using performance-enhancing drugs while with the Texas Rangers from 2001 to 2003, but insisted he stopped before he was traded to the Yankees in February 2004.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the Yankees had no comment.
