NEW YORK -- Yankees utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. received a cortisone injection in his left wrist.

Hairston left Wednesday's game at the Los Angeles Angels midway through an at-bat because of sharp pain after feeling a little pop. He said his wrist hasn't felt right since he injured it diving for a ball this season while playing for Cincinnati.

He was examined Thursday by hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and had an MRI, which showed tendinitis. The Yankees said he is day to day.

Hairston, acquired July 31, is hitting .281 with two homers and 10 RBIs for the Yankees.

Also Thursday, Pittsburgh claimed 25-year-old right-hander Anthony Claggett off waivers from the Yankees. Claggett, obtained from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield trade in November 2006, had a 33.75 ERA in 2 2-3 innings over two appearances with New York this year. He also was 7-7 with a 3.07 ERA in 34 relief appearances and five starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Pittsburgh cleared a spot on its 40-man roster by transferring right-hander Jose Ascanio from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.
