The Mets have looked into bringing back Pedro Martinez, according to one baseball man who has spoken with them.

The club has talked with Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, and indications are that the Mets are continuing to kick around the idea internally. But Martinez's price tag at the moment appears to be more than they're interested in guaranteeing.

An official of one club that kicked the tires on Martinez this winter told recently that "he wants more than Brad Penny got" from the Cardinals. Penny recently signed a one year, $7.5 million, plus incentives that could hike that amount to $9 million if Penny pitches 205 innings or more.

Martinez went 5-1 in nine starts with the Phillies down the stretch, but seemingly opened the Mets' eyes by beating them twice -- including a Sept. 13 game in which he threw eight shutout innings against them, striking out seven.

However, the Mets also have been speaking to a number of free-agent starters and seem more focused on a group that includes Joel Pineiro, Doug Davis and Jon Garland. They were also interested in Jason Marquis, but Marquis is bound for Washington.
