Brandon Webb throws off mound

PHOENIX -- Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb threw off the mound on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing right shoulder surgery.

Webb said he was pleased with how he felt after throwing between 20 and 25 pitches in the Chase Field bullpen.

"[It] went good," Webb said, according to MLB.com. "[The] ball came out well, but I was just thinking about arm slot on every throw. That's to be expected, not having thrown on the mound in so long."

Webb's manager, A.J. Hinch, was also pleased with the session, according to the Arizona Republic.

"It was a good session, a good positive step forward. I am happy about it," he said, according to the report.

Hinch said Webb will throw off a mound again later this week or next week before reporting to the team's spring training camp in Tucson, Ariz., according to the report. D-backs pitchers and catchers are due to report to spring training a week from Friday.

Webb made one start last year, then underwent surgery on Aug. 4. The club exercised an $8.5 million option for 2010 in hopes that the former NL Cy Young Award winner would return to dominance. Webb turns 31 in May.

Until last year, Webb had been a stalwart of the Arizona staff, pitching at least 200 innings every year from 2004-08. He won the 2006 NL Cy Young Award and finished second in 2007 and 2008.

Webb is 87-62 with a 3.27 ERA in seven seasons.
