Blue Jays place Hill on 15-day DL
"I know I can play," Hill said. "That's what I told them. That was the first thing I said: 'I know I can play.' But the bottom line is, it's not playing at a speed that I know would benefit myself or the team."
Hill said he ran the bases before Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox, fielding ground balls and testing out the new artificial turf installed at the Rogers Centre.
The DL move was made retroactive to April 8.
"I mean, if you had five or six days left in the season, you'd probably wrap it up and nurse it and get him through it," Gaston said. "But to play another six months with it? It's a little bit tough."
McDonald started at second against the White Sox.
