Bergmann designated for assignment
PHILADELPHIA -- Left-hander Scott Olsen and outfielder Justin Maxwell have been recalled by the Washington Nationals from Triple-A Syracuse, and right-hander Jason Bergmann has been designated for assignment.
The moves came before the Nationals played the Phillies in Philadelphia on Thursday. Olsen was brought up to start the game.
Olsen was edged out for a rotation spot in spring training and made one start at Syracuse this season. Thursday's game is his first in the majors since surgery on his left shoulder in July.
Maxwell hit .333 in four games at Syracuse. He replaces outfielder Roger Bernadina, who was optioned to Syracuse after Wednesday's game at Philadelphia.
Bergmann went 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in four relief appearances this season.
Also, the Nationals voided the option on right-hander Garrett Mock and placed him on the disabled list with a cervical spine injury. Mock allowed two runs and four hits with five walks in only 3 1/3 innings in his first start last Friday against the New York Mets. He was sent to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday and his injury was discovered after he threw a bullpen session on Monday.
