Velez to spend night in hospital
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said CT scans were negative after Velez was struck on the left side of the head by a sharp liner hit by teammate Pat Burrell in the fourth inning Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Bochy said Velez never lost consciousness but was "a little out of it" after first being struck. He said Velez was speaking at the hospital, where he's expected to undergo more tests overnight.
Bochy said Velez was seated on the top of the bench and had his view blocked when Burrell's foul shot into the dugout. Velez couldn't react in time to get out of the way and went to the ground after being hit. Teammates immediately gathered around, while Burrell took a few moments before stepping back into the batter's box.
Giants trainers continued to work on Velez into the bottom half of the inning before strapping him to a stretcher. He was carried into the tunnel leading to the visitors clubhouse and then was taken to a hospital.
