Howard: Hit King's Advice For Rocket
The Hit King spent 15 years in adamant public denial that he gambled on baseball. Is there a teaching moment in there for Roger Clemens? Maybe, Johnette Howard writes, but only if the Rocket really wants to learn it. Story
The former pitcher will appear before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton for allegedly lying to Congress about his use of steroids.
The six-count indictment alleges that Clemens obstructed a congressional inquiry with 15 different statements made under oath, including denials that he had ever used steroids or human growth hormone.
Clemens had been prominently mentioned in the Mitchell report, Major League Baseball's own accounting of its steroid problem, and he went to Capitol Hill on his own to clear his name. He appeared at a congressional hearing in February 2008, along with Brian McNamee, his former trainer.
McNamee, who had cooperated with Mitchell's investigation, testified that he had injected Clemens, while Clemens steadfastly denied using steroids or HGH.

Clemens faces a combined maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, though under U.S. sentencing guidelines, the recommended range of time is between 15 and 21 months.
His attorney, Rusty Hardin, has said federal prosecutors made Clemens a plea offer but Clemens rejected it. Hardin has declined to comment on details of the proposed plea deal.
