Elijah Dukes arrested in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. -- Authorities say former Major League Baseball player Elijah Dukes has been jailed in Tampa on charges related to allegedly failing to pay child support.
Hillsborough County jail records show the one-time outfielder for the Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals was arrested Monday on contempt of court charges. He remained in jail Tuesday.
Dukes appeared in 280 games over three seasons for the Rays and Nationals, who released him before the 2010 season. He batted .242 with 31 homers and 123 RBIs during his career.
The 26-year-old had numerous on- and off-field problems before the Nationals acquired him from the Rays in a trade before the 2008 season.
During his time in Tampa Bay's organization, he was suspended both in the majors and the minors for various confrontations with umpires, coaches and teammates.
