Shin-Soo Choo's exemption official
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have been told by South Korean officials that outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has received his military exemption for helping his country win a gold medal at the Asian Games.
Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said Tuesday that the team was informed by Korean baseball's governing body that Choo will not have to fulfill his two-year military obligation. All South Korean men must serve in the military before turning 30.
Antonetti said he has not had personal contact with Choo, who is traveling in Asia.
Last week, Antonetti said the Indians are exploring the possibility of signing Choo to a long-term contract. The 28-year-old batted .300 with 22 homers, 22 steals and 90 RBIs in 2010 for the Indians.
He is eligible for salary arbitration this winter. Choo made $461,100 last season.
