SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge in the perjury case against Barry Bonds has asked the sides to find a way to resolve the charges before the trial next month.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston made the request during a hearing Friday, and prosecutors said they would discuss a plea agreement with Bonds' lawyers. But an attorney representing the home run king tells The New York Times and other media outlets that he believes the case will go to trial.

Bonds is expected to plead not guilty when he is arraigned March 1 for the third time since he was initially charged in 2007 with lying to a grand jury about his alleged performance-enhancing drug use. The trial is scheduled to start March 21.
