Ian Desmond back from paternity leave

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals have reinstated shortstop Ian Desmond from the paternity leave list and optioned outfielder Roger Bernadina to Triple-A Syracuse.

Desmond missed two games after his wife, Chelsey, gave birth Tuesday to the couple's first son, Grayson Wesley Desmond. He is hitting .205 with two home runs, eight RBIs and eight stolen bases this season.

Bernadina appeared in both games during his call-up, going 2-for-3 with a double. He has hit .267 with one home run and two RBIs in 13 games with Syracuse.

Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said he has been impressed by Bernadina but would rather have him play every day at Syracuse than sit on the bench in Washington.
