Willie Bloomquist returns to D-backs
Bloomquist missed 21 games with a strained right hamstring. He hit .306 with seven RBIs in 14 games before getting hurt.
The 30-year-old Burroughs was hitting .386 with 15 RBIs in 27 games in the minors. He signed as a free agent in November after being out of pro baseball since June 2007. He played parts of five major league seasons with San Diego and Tampa Bay.
"We thought he was the best guy to fill in. He does have major league experience, left-handed bat, kind of a contact guy, will put the bat on the ball and give us professional at-bats," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "It's good to have him and hopefully there will be a spot for him where he can help us."
Gibson praised Burroughs, now 30, for having learned from experience.
"I'm sure he has a different outlook than he did five or six years ago," Gibson said. "What do they say about a bike? Ride a bike? He's a pure hitter. He has been."
Galarraga was designated for assignment Tuesday night after going 3-4 with a 5.91 ERA in eight starts. Mora went on the bereavement list.
"He wanted another start, but ... this was what we felt was best," Gibson said. "There's things he was not executing. It was obvious, not consistently enough. So if he ends up back with us in Reno then he'll have a chance to go down there and do that."
