Tony La Russa turned in wrong lineup
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Tony La Russa mistakenly turned in a lineup card with the wrong catcher, burning All-Star Yadier Molina from his bench Friday night.
"No excuse," La Russa said Saturday. "Messed up, and it could have been significant."
La Russa had planned to give Molina a day off and start Gerald Laird, who was activated off the 15-day disabled list earlier in the week, but the lineup card he submitted to umpires had Molina playing. After the top half of the first inning, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson notified umpires, and the result was Molina had been replaced.
"I had a decision to make, how I wanted to handle it, when and where," Gibson said. "I chose to do it then, I have my reasons for doing it that way."
La Russa said Saturday he had been distracted when writing out the card.
"The lineup card changes, you manage what's on the card," Gibson said. "It changes a little bit for me, and him. You don't want to play short-handed, I wouldn't want to."
