LEE PUTTING UP HISTORIC NUMBERS
By Mark Simon, ESPN Research
Cliff Lee thanked plenty of people -- his offense, his defense, just about everybody -- after he shut out the White Sox on Monday to improve to an incredible 20-2 on the season. Lee is baseball's first 20-game winner this season and the first for the Indians in 34 years. The Elias Sports Bureau noted Lee was the first Indians pitcher to be the first pitcher in baseball to 20 wins in a season since Hall of Famer Bob Lemon in 1954. Any way you look at it, Lee has been ultra-impressive in 2008, certainly far different than the pitcher who posted a 5-8 record a season ago.| Best winning percentage single season, minimum 20 decisions (since 1900) | ||||

MONDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
| GOOD |
• Stephen Drew hit for the cycle as part of his 5-for-5 day in the Diamondbacks' 8-6 win over the Cardinals. Drew drove home a run on the homer and scored three times. Later in the day, the Mariners' Adrian Beltre also hit for the cycle. |
BAD |
• Eric Gagne couldn't hold the lead for the Brewers. He served up a key two-run shot to Carlos Delgado in the eighth inning. All told, Gagne gave up four hits and three runs in the inning as the Brewers watched a 2-1 lead turn into a 4-2 loss. |
UGLY |
• The Yankees unloaded on Justin Verlander, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings. Verlander was tagged for seven hits, eight runs and a homer. He also handed out two walks in his brief appearance. |
FORWARD THINKING: TUESDAY
• Yankees at Rays, 7:05 p.m. ET: Though the Yankees likely can't catch the Rays in the AL East (the Yanks start the series 12 games back), they can still make one last-gasp wild card push (they are 6 1/2 games out in the wild card). Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.41 ERA) has dominated the Rays this season, going 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA. Matt Garza (11-7, 3.53 ERA) was strong in his one game against the Yankees, pitching seven shutout innings in a win on May 12.
• Mets at Brewers, 8:05 p.m. ET: Manny Parra (10-6, 4.00 ERA) tries to help the Brewers put Monday's disappointing 4-2 loss against the Mets behind them. After going 0-4 in a five-start stretch, Parra has put together consecutive solid outings, allowing three total runs in those two starts. Jon Niese (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his major league debut for the Mets.
• Astros at Cubs, 8:05 p.m. ET: Carlos Zambrano (13-5, 3.53 ERA) returns to the mound after being scratched from a start with what the team called a "tired arm." Zambrano lasted just 4 1/3 innings in his most recent start, giving up eight hits and six runs in a loss against the Pirates. Brandon Backe (9-12, 5.42 ERA) has been roughed up by the Cubs this season, going 0-2 with a 9.56 ERA in two starts.
STAT OF THE DAY
According to Inside Edge's scouting data, hitters are most likely to chase pitches out of the zone on two-strike counts, swinging on 36 percent of bad pitches on average. This season, only three teams have managed a 5 percent or better advantage in two-strike chase percentage:
| Chase percentage with two-strikes | |||
| Team | Opponent offense | Own offense | Advantage pct. |
| Rays | 37.1 | 31.0 | 6.1 |
| Rockies | 37.8 | 31.7 | 6.1 |
| Diamondbacks | 34.4 | 29.0 | 5.4 |
