Led the Cardinals in 2006 to their first World Series title since 1982, joining Sparky Anderson as the only managers to win a championship in both leagues. … Named the 48th manager in team history on Oct. 23, 1995 after managing 17 years in the American League. … In 2003, became just the seventh major league manager to win 2,000 career games. Owns 500 wins with three different teams (Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Cardinals). Began professional managing career in 1978 with Knoxville of the Class AA Southern League before taking his first major league managing job on Aug. 2, 1979 with the White Sox. From 1988-90, he led the A's to three consecutive pennants and the World Series title in 1989. … Compiled a .199 batting average in 132 major league games, playing for the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. His professional career spanned 16 seasons, starting in 1962, when he signed with Kansas City the night he graduated from high school. … Graduated from Jefferson High School and the University of South Florida -- both located in Tampa, Florida. Passed the bar exam in December 1979 after graduating from Florida State University's School of Law the previous year. One of just five lawyer-managers in baseball history.
