Under contract through 2007. … Named the Twins' third base coach in 1998 and replaced Tom Kelly as manager on January 4, 2002. … In 2004, Gardenhire became the first manager in Twins' history to lead the team to three straight division championships. Attended the University of Texas at Austin and in 1978 set a school record with 10 RBI in a game. In his senior year, he captained the team to a fourth-place showing in the College World Series. … Drafted by the New York Mets in the sixth round of the 1979 draft, he hit .232 for the Mets from 1981-1985. In 1986, Gardenhire missed out on a World Series ring when the Mets traded him to the Minnesota Twins for Don Iasparro.
