• Kevin Youkilis belted a two-run homer over The Monster in the eighth to make it 11-2.

• Daisuke Matsuzaka followed two sub-par playoff outings with his first postseason victory. He allowed two runs on six hits in five innings, striking out three and walking none. Fellow Japanese rookie Hideki Okajima pitched two innings of shutout ball. Jon Papelbon got the last six outs.

• Jake Westbrook settled down after spotting Boston a 3-0 lead, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. He retired his last seven batters.
