Davies makes Major League debut for reeling Braves

Atlanta (23-18) at Boston (24-17), 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Kyle Davies will not face an easy task in his major league debut for the Atlanta Braves on Saturday when they face the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox in the second game of a three-game interleague series.

Considered the Braves' top pitching prospect, the 21-year-old Davies will be called up from Class AAA Richmond to start in place of John Thomson, who was placed on the disabled list with a right middle finger injury.

Davies is 2-1 with a 4.78 ERA in eight starts for Richmond this season, striking out 38 with 21 walks in 43 1/3 innings.

He will try to halt Atlanta's losing streak, which was extended to four games in the series opener Friday with a 4-3 setback to Boston. Jason Varitek and Bill Mueller each homered for the Red Sox, who won for just the second time in five games.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (4-2, 3.61 ERA) will get the start for Boston on Saturday. He was hammered for five runs and 11 hits in seven innings Sunday in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Wakefield's usual catcher, Doug Mirabelli, was placed on the disabled list before Friday's game, meaning either Varitek or Shawn Wooten, who was called up to replace Mirabelli on the roster, will be given the difficult duty of catching Wakefield's knuckleball.
