Cubs RHP Maddux two strikeouts shy of 3,000

San Francisco (42-56) at Chicago Cubs (51-48), 8:05 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux looks to join some elite company Tuesday when the Chicago Cubs continue a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

Maddux (8-7, 4.55 ERA) needs just two strikeouts to become the ninth pitcher in major league history to record both 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts. He could become the first pitcher to accomplish both parts against the same team, having recorded career win No. 300 vs. San Francisco last August 7.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner is just 1-3 in his last five starts. Last Thursday, he did not factor in the decision of a 9-6 loss at Cincinnati after allowing three runs and nine hits in five innings.

Maddux is 24-14 with a 3.01 ERA in his career against the Giants.

San Francisco counters with Noah Lowry (6-10, 4.69). The lefthander is 1-3 with a 3.62 ERA in July.

In Monday's series opener, Chicago rallied for a 3-2 victory against Giants closer Tyler Walker. Neifi Perez tied the game with an RBI single in the eighth inning and Jeromy Burnitz ended the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Before the game, the Cubs placed oft-injured righthander Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation.
