Martinez can pass Lolich on strikeouts list

NY Mets (66-60) at Arizona (58-70), 9:40 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Pedro Martinez has to be smiling at the way the New York Mets have scored runs in this series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Martinez gets the start as the Mets look to complete a four-game sweep on Thursday.

New York has outscored Arizona, 36-6, in the first three games, collecting 37 hits in the last two wins. Rookie Mike Jacobs and David Wright belted two home runs apiece in Wednesday's 18-4 triumph.

Winless in his last five starts, Martinez (12-5, 2.86 ERA) needs four strikeouts to pass Mickey Lolich and move into 15th place on the all-time list. Despite allowing six hits in six scoreless innings against Washington last Saturday, Martinez did not get a win after the bullpen squandered an 8-0 lead.

New York is 5 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta in the National League East and two in back of Philadelphia in the wild card race.

Arizona's Javier Vazquez (10-12, 4.67) makes his 250th career start. He gave up one run and five hits in eight innings of a win at Cincinnati last Saturday.

The Diamondbacks have lost five straight games against the Mets.
