Cubs RHP Williams faces former team for first time

Chicago Cubs (69-71) at San Francisco (63-75), 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Jerome Williams faces his former team for the first time Friday, when the Chicago Cubs continue their four-game set with the San Francisco Giants at SBC Park.

Williams (5-7, 4.77 ERA) went 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in four games with the Giants before being traded to Chicago for veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins on May 28.

Williams has been inconsistent since joining the Cubs, as evidenced in his last two starts. The 23-year-old was shelled for six runs in only 1 2/3 innings August 29 in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He rebounded with 7 1/3 strong frames of Sunday's 2-0 victory at Pittsburgh.

Williams looks to maintain the momentum created by Chicago's recent run. The Cubs have won six of their last seven games, including a 5-3 triumph in Thursday's series opener. Carlos Zambrano pitched seven strong innings, delivered a pair of hits and scored the go-ahead run.

Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, San Francisco turns to Matt Cain (1-1, 2.25), who makes his third major league start. The 20-year-old righthander has allowed a total of just three runs and six hits in 12 innings over his first two outings. On Sunday, he allowed one run in seven frames of a 3-2 win at Arizona to pick up his first career victory.

The Giants, who have dropped three of four meetings with the Cubs this year, trail first-place San Diego by seven games in the National League West Division.
