Carpenter tries to win his 14th straight game

St. Louis (95-55) at Chicago Cubs (73-76), 2:20 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- After their postgame champagne toast, the St. Louis Cardinals get back to the business of getting ready for the playoffs.

Chris Carpenter looks for his 14th consecutive victory when the Cardinals conclude their season series with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Unbeaten since June 8, Carpenter (21-4, 2.31 ERA) has six complete games during the streak. However, he did not get a decision against Pittsburgh on Wednesday after giving up four runs and 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Larry Walker drove in a pair of runs to give St. Louis a 5-1 triumph over Chicago on Saturday. The win guaranteed the Cardinals would finish with more wins than Houston, prompting a locker-room celebration.

The Cubs give the ball to Carlos Zambrano (13-5, 3.22), who is 7-1 since the All-Star break and 6-1 with a 2.47 ERA at home. He yielded three runs and three hits in six innings against Cincinnati on Wednesday but did not get a decision.

St. Louis has won two of the three meetings against the Cubs this weekend and needs five more victories to reach 100.
