Royals look to avoid 100th loss

Detroit (67-81) at Kansas City (48-99), 8:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals hope to avoid losing their 100th game of the year on Monday when they host the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game series.

After winning two of three at home against the White Sox last week, the Royals were swept in a three-game weekend set against the Indians.

C.C. Sabathia tossed eight strong frames while Travis Hafner, Ben Broussard and Jhonny Peralta homered to lift Cleveland to an 11-0 triumph on Sunday.

Mike Wood (4-7, 3.81 ERA) makes his eighth start of the year for Kansas City. Despite receiving little run support, the righthander has fared well as a starter, posting a 3.46 ERA in his first seven outings.

The Tigers counter with Jeremy Bonderman (14-12, 4.35), who has been sidelined with elbow stiffness since September 4. The hard-throwing righthander surrendered just two runs and five hits in eight frames but took the loss at Chicago in his last start.

Prior to suffering his elbow injury, Bonderman had gone winless in his previous three outings.

Detroit has lost its last three games, including a 5-3 setback against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday.
