Royals look for second straight win vs. Tigers

Detroit (67-82) at Kansas City (49-99), 5:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals hope they can carry over some of their recent offensive magic when they meet the Detroit Tigers in the opening game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Matt Stairs belted a three-run homer and the Royals recorded 18 hits to snap a three- game losing streak with a 10-4 triumph over the Tigers on Monday.

With a 5-12 record in September, the Royals will try to prevent their third 100-loss season in four years. They are five defeats away from tying the franchise-low total set last year.

Rookie J.P. Howell (2-5, 7.22 ERA) tries to collect his second win since June 11. He did not get a decision against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday after giving up six runs and seven hits in three innings.

Detroit turns to Mike Maroth (13-13, 4.94), who is 8-4 since June 30. He allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings of Thursday's victory against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Carlos Pena and Chris Shelton both homered on Monday for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight game and is 4-15 in September. With their 82nd defeat, the Tigers had their streak of consecutive losing seasons extended to 12.
