Bonderman tries to give Tigers second straight win

Detroit (1-0) at Kansas City (0-1), 2:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers and Jim Leyland look to make it two straight wins against the Kansas City Royals when the American League Central Division rivals meet on Wednesday.

With the help of two homers by Chris Shelton and six excellent innings from Kenny Rogers, the Tigers posted a 3-1 victory over the Royals in Leyland's first game back as manager after a six-year hiatus.

After an off day Tuesday, the Tigers will send righthander Jeremy Bonderman to the mound against Joe Mays.

A 23-year-old righthander, Bonderman had 13 wins through July last season but won just once the rest of the way trying to pitch with a sore elbow.

Mays was an American League All-Star in 2001, going 17-13 with a 3.16 ERA, but he has won just 18 games since.

The 30-year-old was 6-10 with a 5.65 ERA for Minnesota last year before signing with Kansas City as a free agent in the offseason.
