Braves hope to contain Soriano, even series with Nationals

Atlanta (8-9) at Washington (7-10) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- John Thomson would love nothing more than for Alfonso Soriano to get the day off Saturday. It seems like a slim chance at this point.

Thomson tries to contain the red-hot Soriano on Saturday when the Atlanta Braves continue their three-game series with the Washington Nationals.

Soriano went 4-for-5 in Friday's series opener, belting three home runs and collecting a career high-tying five RBI as the Nationals posted a 7-3 triumph. The four-time All-Star also extended his hitting streak to eight games, during which he is hitting .385 (15-for-39).

Thomson (0-0, 1.23 ERA) is the pitcher that has to deal with Soriano in this one, but the righthander enters with some momentum. He has not allowed an earned run in either of his two starts this season, including Sunday's outing against San Diego in which he yielded just one hit in six scoreless innings.

The Nationals will counter with Ramon Ortiz (0-2, 7.39), who still is seeking his first win with the team. He is coming off his best start with Washington, however, as he yielded three runs in five innings of Sunday's 7-5 win at Florida.

Ortiz is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in three career starts against the Braves, who enter with a .310 career average against the righthander.
