O'Connor makes third career start for Nationals

Pittsburgh (9-23) at Washington (10-21) 1:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - If Michael O'Connor's third major league start is anywhere near as good as the first two, the Washington Nationals should be in good shape Sunday.

The 25-year-old lefthander takes the mound for the Nationals as they try to capture the rubber game of their three-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

O'Connor (1-1, 0.75 ERA) allowed three unearned runs in his debut April 27 vs. St. Louis before holding the New York Mets to one run and two hits in seven innings of Tuesday's 6-2 victory.

The Pirates will counter with an impressive young lefthander of their own in Zach Duke (2-2, 3.46), who is coming off his best outing of the campaign. The 23-year-old tossed a five-hitter Tuesday for his first career shutout in an 8-0 rout of the Chicago Cubs.

Duke, who will be making his first appearance against Washington, has allowed three runs or fewer in five of his six starts, including each of the last four.

After dropping a 6-0 decision in Friday's series opener, Pittsburgh rebounded for a 5-4 victory Saturday. Jason Bay delivered the game-winning homer in the 11th inning and Nate McLouth added three hits for the Pirates, who have a chance for just their second series victory of the season.
