Bonds can tie Babe Ruth with 714th home run vs. Cubs

Chicago Cubs (14-17) at San Francisco (15-17) 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Barry Bonds can make Rich Hill a reluctant part of history.

Bonds looks to tie Hall of Famer Babe Ruth for second place on the all-time list with his 714th home run Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants host the Chicago Cubs to open a three-game series.

A seven-time National League Most Valuable Player, Bonds is back home, where he hit his 500th, 600th and 700th career home runs, as well as the 73rd of his record-breaking 2001 season. He hit his 713th Sunday at Philadelphia.

With Bonds getting a night off Monday, the Giants received home runs Pedro Feliz and Mike Lamb to snap a four-game losing streak in a 7-5 triumph over the Houston Astros.

Coming off his best outing of the season, Jason Schmidt (2-2, 3.77 ERA) tries for his third consecutive victory for San Francisco. He tossed a five-hitter without yielding a walk in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Looking to avoid becoming the answer to a trivia question, Hill (0-1, 11.25) makes his second start of the season. He was pounded for five runs and six hits in four innings of Thursday's loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cubs have lost a season-high seven straight games and 10 of 12, including Monday's 8-3 loss to the the San Diego Padres. In their last 10 contests, they have been outscored, 62-12.
