Bedard, struggling Orioles begin series with high-flying Royals

Kansas City (10-22) at Baltimore (15-20) 7:05 pm EDT

BALTIMORE (Ticker) - Erik Bedard takes the mound Friday in search of his first win in over three weeks when the Baltimore Orioles host the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series.

Since improving to 4-0 in a 9-4 victory over Cleveland on April 20, Bedard (4-2, 4.54 ERA) has struggled, giving up 13 runs in his last 13 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old is coming off his worst outing of the season on Saturday, a 9-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox where he failed to make it past the third inning.

The Orioles will need Bedard to bounce back if they hope to improve their recent poor play. Baltimore has dropped 13 of its last 17, including four of the last six at home.

The Royals, on the other hand, are playing their best baseball of the young season. A perennial doormat in the American League, Kansas City has won five of its last seven and is riding high after a three-game sweep of Cleveland this week.

Angel Berroa had three hits, including a solo homer, as the Royals rallied for a 10-8 victory over the Indians on Thursday. Aaron Guiel also homered for Kansas City, which scored a total of 24 runs in the three-game set.

The Royals on Friday give the ball to Runelvys Hernandez (1-2, 4.91), who looks to rebound from his worst start of the season. The burly righthander allowed season highs of six runs and nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings of a 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
