Bonds looks for No. 714 against Sele, Dodgers

LA Dodgers (18-18) at San Francisco (17-19), 4:05 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - After going four straight games without tying Babe Ruth for second on the all-time home run list, Barry Bonds takes aim at Aaron Sele on Saturday when the San Francisco Giants play the middle contest of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bonds, who has gone 1-for-13 since hitting No. 713, went 0-for-3 with a walk in Friday's 6-1 defeat as the Giants celebrated the 75th birthday of Bonds' godfather, Willie Mays. The seven-time National League Most Valuable Player is 0-for-3 lifetime against Sele.

The 35-year-old Sele (1-0, 1.35 ERA), who is attempting to stay in the game after four years of ineffectiveness and arm problems, gets his second start of the season. The righthander allowed just one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings in his Dodger debut against Milwaukee.

San Francisco will start Noah Lowry (1-0, 2.08 ERA), who is making his second start since missing a month with a strained right oblique, and his third overall. In his last outing Monday, the lefthander yielded just two runs over seven innings in outdueling Roy Oswalt and the Houston Astros.

The Giants are 30-19 in games started by Lowry, who has yielded just three earned runs in 22 2/3 innings in five games - three starts - against the Dodgers.

In the series opener, Brad Penny pitched five scoreless innings before succumbing to lower back stiffness and Kenny Lofton drove in three runs as Los Angeles won for the sixth time in seven games to get back to .500.
