Verlander goes for sixth win in series opener vs. Royals

Detroit (29-14) at Kansas City (10-31) 8:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Justin Verlander gets a chance to capitalize on the Kansas City Royals.

Verlander (5-3, 3.18 ERA) and the Detroit Tigers open a four-game series with the Royals, losers of nine straight games, on Monday.

The 23-year-old righthander has been impressive, winning four of his last five decisions, including a 2-0 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. Verlander pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks.

The Tigers took two of three contests from Cincinnati after a 1-0 win on Sunday in the finale of an interleague series. Nate Robertson struck out seven in seven-plus frames and Placido Polanco drove in the only run.

Detroit has won nine of its last 10 games and owns the best record in baseball.

Kansas City, which has the worst record, turns to Jeremy Affeldt (2-3, 5.46).

In his previous outing, Affeldt surrendered five runs - four earned - three hits and six walks in six innings of a 5-0 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday.

The Royals, who have lost all four meetings with the Tigers this campaign, suffered a 10-3 setback to St. Louis on Sunday.
