Tigers aim to send Royals to 13th straight defeat

Detroit (32-14) at Kansas City (10-34) 2:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals have reversed roles from the 2003 season.

The Tigers go for their 13th win in 14 games on Thursday when they conclude a four-game set with the Royals, who will take the field with a 12-game losing streak.

In 2003, Detroit set an American League record with 119 losses while Kansas City was baseball's surprise team with an 83-79 mark.

This year, though, it is the Tigers who are off to a great start - the best in baseball. Meanwhile, the Royals have already endured a pair of double-digit losing streaks and appear headed to 100 losses for the fourth time in five seasons.

Both teams continued on their ways Wednesday as Detroit posted a 6-3 triumph behind seven solid innings from Jeremy Bonderman and two homers from Omar Infante.

Kansas City's current slide is tied with one from 1997 for the second longest in club history, trailing only last year's 19-game skid. Additionally, the Royals have lost all seven games to the Tigers this season.

The Royals will give the ball to Denny Bautista (0-2, 3.75 ERA), who is winless despite allowing two earned runs or fewer in four of his five starts. He yielded one run in six innings Saturday but still came up short in a 4-2 defeat against St. Louis.

Detroit counters with Mike Maroth (5-2, 2.45), who has not surrendered more than four runs in any game this year. The lefthander was reached for three runs in 6 1/3 frames Saturday in an eventual 7-6 victory against Cincinnati.
