Arizona at Atlanta Game 2

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For the Atlanta Braves, Saturday's doubleheader against the Arizona Diamondbacks will feature two guys named John on the mound trying to rebound from their worst outings of the season.

After John Smoltz takes the mound in the opener, John Thomson will try to bounce back from a horrible outing in the second game of a twinbill against the Diamondbacks.

While Smoltz lasted six innings on Sunday and his teammates had eight home runs at Chicago, Thomson (2-4, 3.75 ERA) was not nearly as fortunate. Thomson pitched Monday against Los Angeles and was rocked for five runs and seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings.

Thomson has turned out those type of disappointing outings in his last three starts. He began the season with a 1.87 ERA through nine starts but has been roughed up for 20 runs and 23 hits in his last 14 1/3 frames.

Thomson is 2-3 in 11 career starts vs. Arizona.

Thomson's opponent will be Claudio Vargas (5-2, 5.44), who has won just once in his last three starts. Vargas has not had a decision in two of those outings but in this stretch has allowed 16 runs and 18 hits in 15 innings.

Vargas has pitched decently against Atlanta, going 5-3 with a 3.98 ERA in 12 career appearances.
