Red Sox LHP Wells to make first start in more than two months

Cleveland (45-58) at Boston (62-41) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- If David Wells was able to pick which team he would face in his return from the disabled list, the Cleveland Indians likely would be at the top of the list.

Wells makes his first start in more than two months Monday as the Boston Red Sox open a four-game set with the struggling Indians.

Out since May 26 with right knee soreness, Wells (0-1, 8.64 ERA) has given Boston a total of 8 1/3 innings through the first four months of the season. The obese lefthander has endured three separate stints on the disabled list this year alone.

However, Wells does return to face an Indians team against which he is 20-4 with a 3.52 ERA. He has won seven straight decisions against Cleveland since the start of the 2001 season.

Wells will try to help the Red Sox rebound from a disappointing series vs. Anaheim this past weekend. They lost two of the three contests against the Angels, salvaging only a 7-6 victory in 11 innings on Saturday.

However, Boston won't be receiving a lot of sympathy from Cleveland, which has lost 15 of its last 21 games. The Indians traded second baseman Ronnie Belliard to St. Louis on Sunday and likely will continue to deal before Monday's 4 p.m. EDT deadline.

Paul Byrd (7-6, 4.71) takes the mound for Cleveland for the first time since a rough outing against Detroit last Tuesday. The crafty righthander was charged with seven runs and 10 hits in only three innings but did not factor in the decision of an eventual 12-7 victory.
