Williams makes Mets debut vs. Rockies

Colorado (59-63) at NY Mets (73-48) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - On a night they honor a part of their past, the New York Mets also will welcome a new face into the fold.

Dave Williams makes his Mets debut Saturday when he faces the Colorado Rockies in the second game of a weekend series.

In eight starts with the Cincinnati Reds this season, Williams posted a 2-3 mark with a 7.20 ERA. He was designated in assignment in May and picked up by the pitching-hungry Mets.

In seven starts with Class AAA Norfolk, Williams went 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA. The veteran lefthander, who has a career record of 19-29 in five major league seasons, will take the mound on a special night at Shea Stadium.

The Mets will spend Saturday honoring their 1986 World Series championship team that rallied from deficits in Game Six and Seven to defeat the Boston Red Sox.

New York did not conjure up too many memories of that team earlier this week, losing three straight contests to Philadelphia. But the Mets have rebounded to post two consecutive wins since, including a 6-3 triumph Friday behind two RBI apiece from David Wright and Endy Chavez.

The Mets will try to keep the momentum going as they face Jeff Francis (9-9, 3.39). The lefthander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six straight starts, while working at least seven innings in each contest. He yielded two runs in 7 1/3 frames Monday but did not factor into a 4-3 win vs. Arizona.

The Rockies have lost three of their last four and sit five games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division.
