Former Olympic teammates meet when Brewers host Astros

Houston (68-71) at Milwaukee (64-76) 8:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Roy Oswalt and Ben Sheets were vital components in the United States' gold-medal showing at the 2000 Olympics.

The two pitchers will oppose each other Friday when the Houston Astros try to keep their flickering wild card hopes alive in the opener of a three-game weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

With 23 games remaining, the defending National League champion Astros have dropped three of their five contests in September and trail the San Diego Padres by five games in the wild card chase.

Oswalt (11-8, 3.12 ERA) has won five of his seven decisions since the All-Star break and is 47-16 lifetime after the midseason classic. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the New York Mets on Sunday before allowing three hits in seven frames.

Lance Berkman delivered a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning as Houston posted a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia to gain a split of the two-game series.

Sheets (4-6, 4.54), who was the winning pitcher against Cuba in gold-medal game at Sydney, Australia, has lost both his starts against the Astros this season. He did not get a decision Saturday against the Florida Marlins after yielding three runs and four hits in seven innings.

Milwaukee was denied in its bid for a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers after collecting just three hits in Wednesday's 2-1 loss.
