Inconsistent Weaver looks to get back on track

San Francisco (74-74) at St Louis (79-68) 2:15 pm EDT

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Jeff Weaver has been maddeningly inconsistent this season.

The St. Louis Cardinals send Weaver to the mound on Sunday as they try to sweep the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series.

Weaver (6-14, 5.95 ERA) was reasonably solid in his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 7, allowing two runs in five innings. But in his last start, Weaver gave up five runs in five innings and did not factor in St. Louis' 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday.

The Cardinals posted a second straight win on Saturday, as Albert Pujols went 4-for-4 and scored three runs in a 6-1 victory. With the victory, St. Louis pulled 6 1/2 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central.

San Francisco sends Jonathan Sanchez (3-0, 2.40) to the mound in his third start this career.

Sanchez won his first major league start, allowing one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-2 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds on September 6. However, the lefthander struggled Tuesday, giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings but did not factor in a 10-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

The Giants trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by four games in the National League West and are 3 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres in the wild card race.
