PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- For the Pittsburgh Pirates, it was all about execution.

With the game tied at 3 in the seventh inning, the Pirates used aggressive baserunning to score two runs on just one hit and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 Friday night.

"That's a manufactured inning,'' said Adam Hyzdu, who homered, doubled and scored twice. "In general, that's what you want to see.''

Craig Wilson was hit on the shoulder by a pitch from Mike Timlin (4-6) in the seventh, and pinch-runner Tony Alvarez went to third on Hyzdu's double.

Alvarez took off on contact and scored from third on a grounder up the middle even though the Phillies had the infield in, barely beating second baseman Marlon Anderson's throw home.

''(Third base coach Trent Jewett) sent me, he was saying, `You've got to go, you've got to go,'' said Alvarez, a September callup. "I was telling myself that I'd better make it.''

With the bases loaded and one out, Jack Wilson, who had two RBIs, hustled to beat out a potential double-play grounder, allowing Hyzdu to score and make it 5-3. Dan Plesac came in to end the inning by striking out Brian Giles.

Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer for the Phillies.

Pirates reliever Joe Beimel (2-5) pitched to just one batter, striking out Bobby Abreu with the bases loaded in the sixth for his first win since June 7 against Milwaukee.

Mike Williams worked the ninth for his 42nd save in 45 chances.

The Pirates scored two runs in the first, thanks in part to a mental error by Anderson.

Pokey Reese led off with a single and stole second. Catcher Mike Lieberthal's throw went into center field as Anderson never moved to cover the bag. An error was charged to Anderson.

Reese went to third and scored on a triple by Jack Wilson, who came in on a groundout by Giles.

"Marlon was supposed to cover, it was a mental mistake and it led to two runs,'' Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "We don't break games open, so we can't afford to give a team two runs.''

Hyzdu hit his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot in the second, to make it 3-0.

Philadelphia scored a run in the third when Placido Polanco hit a one-out single, moved to second on a flyball to center and scored on a single by Pat Burrell.

Rollins' two-run homer, his 11th of the season, tied it at 3 in the fourth.

Philadelphia starter Hector Mercado, who had pitched out of the bullpen in all but two of his 27 appearances this season, went four innings, giving up three runs on four hits. He matched a career high with five strikeouts.

Pirates starter Josh Fogg went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.

"Josh didn't have his best stuff tonight but he kept us in the game,'' manager Lloyd McClendon said.

The Phillies left the bases loaded twice and stranded 11 to extend their major league-leading total to 1,146 this season.

Game notes

Fogg has given up 25 homers, most by a Pirates pitcher. ... Burrell's RBI gives him 112 this season, the most by a Phillies player since Mike Schmidt had 113 in 1987. ... The Pirates' first four hits went for the cycle. ... Plesac appeared in his 1,003rd game, moving past Goose Gossage into sixth place on the career list. Lee Smith is next with 1,022.
